The photographic experience of photographer Gleide Selma in the political opening in Brazil and Chile

Abstract


The article follows the trajectory of the photographer Gleide Selma (1958-) from Pernambuco, Brazil. We intertwined the oral interview she gave with newspaper clippings, photographic records, and personal files in order to dimension Gleide Selma's performance in the public space, given the field of possibilities she was able to access. The highlights were her work in the alternative press during the process of political opening in Brazil and her career as an independent photographer in the 1980s. In this context, she suffered physical violence while covering a political event in Chile under Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship (1973-1990). We approach the repercussion of this event as it intersects with other cases of political violence that occurred in Chile between the end of May and the beginning of June 1986 amid the escalating repression of protests in that country.
